Ahead of the NATO summit scheduled for June 24–25 in The Hague, the Latvian Saeima adopted an important statement supporting the urgent invitation of Ukraine to the Alliance. This information was published in local media.

The document emphasizes that the invitation will not mean immediate membership but will serve as an important political and moral signal indicating a clear path for Ukraine toward NATO. Latvia also calls on its allies to accelerate this process and highlight it during the summit in The Hague.

The Saeima recalls the decision of the NATO summit in Bucharest in 2008, which confirmed that Ukraine would become a member of the Alliance. It also references the Vilnius summit in 2023, where the Membership Action Plan was rejected as a condition for Ukraine’s Euro-Atlantic integration. In 2024, in Washington, it was confirmed that Ukraine is moving toward irreversible NATO membership.

The document also includes information about an agreement between Latvia and Ukraine, signed in April 2024, which provides political and practical support, including the Euro-Atlantic integration process.

Considering these factors, the Latvian Saeima “supports the earliest possible invitation of Ukraine to NATO membership and the progressive advancement of its accession process to the European Union.” It is emphasized that Latvia’s support for Ukraine’s Euro-Atlantic integration is based on the conviction that “a stable Ukraine is a necessary condition for long-term security in Europe and in Latvia.”

“Taking into account Ukraine’s struggle against Russian aggression, it expresses confidence that Ukraine’s accession to NATO will make a long-term contribution to strengthening security and stability in Europe and the transatlantic area. Ukraine’s aspiration to join NATO is its strategic choice aimed at sustainable security and strengthening the international order in accordance with the geopolitical situation.”
