So an interesting story about the railway signal box at Deganwy, just visible in picture 11, the white, timber-framed structure at the far end of the platform. It’s quite a well-known story amongst signallers in the area – I’ve even heard it mentioned down in south Wales!
The layout of the box was being altered quite a bit. A new window would be installed, and when they went to the box to survey it, the signaller on-duty that day – apparently a reliefman, so not a regular signaller there to begin with – was asked if he’d like the new window to face the quay, or the street. The signaller said that the window should face the street, as he didn’t want the sun to shine too brightly into the box. Therefore, the box has a stunning view behind it, but is totally unable to see it as a result of a short-sighted, idiotic or spiteful signaller.
Now, how much truth is in this, who knows? No one I speak to seems able to identify who this man was, or when he was approached. Indeed, just why the signaller would be consulted on it at all seems unusual. It’s all hearsay, but it is always a curiosity that the large window in the box faces the street and not the stunning view.
Fun story, regardless! 🤣👍
A very beautiful place to visit… the views are outstanding , very much worth a visit.. great photos too
