On Friday, he won another stage in the Tour de Suisse, but while they are currently climbing there, Jordi Meeus also won the Copenhagen Sprint on Sunday. The Belgian from Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe was not supposed to be here at all, but he made perfect use of his starting position with a victory in the hectic Danish sprint race.
Immediately after his victory in Neuhausen am Rheinfall, it was decided to withdraw Meeus from the race in Switzerland. And that turned out to be an excellent decision. “It feels really good,” he said after his victory in the flash interview. “I’ve just come out of the Tour de Suisse, but we had some injured riders, and because it was all climbing there, we decided to come here. I think it was a good choice,” winked the 26-year-old sprinter.

The busy race schedule did take its toll on Meeus. “I was feeling a bit exhausted after six tough days of racing in Switzerland, but I still had some power left,” said the winner, who did not expect to win, especially after a strong breakaway with Daan Hoole, among others. “It was a very strong breakaway, and we knew catching them on the local circuit would be difficult. But my team and some other teams did a great job. It was a grueling final, but I’m glad I was able to win.”

Meeus timed it perfectly: “I knew there was a headwind”

Meeus was nowhere to be seen in the sprint, but he timed his sprint perfectly and beat Dylan Groenewegen, among others. “It was very hectic, and if I could have chosen, I would have been a little further forward for the last corner. But I knew there was a headwind, and I had to hope that gaps would open up in front of me. That happened perfectly, and I still had a good sprint left.”
