day three of the cleanup operation 23 people died when Russia struck this building with a ballistic missile on Monday 35 apartments were reduced to rubble and dozens more irreparably damaged Svitana says her family have lived in the block since it was built Upstairs volunteers are helping her daughter Oolena with the cleanup The family is going to stay with relatives for now Look at the view from our window My grandpa worked in that factory From down in the shelter we knew immediately it was our building that got hit There was panic but thank God we’re alive [Music] Hundreds of volunteers always flock to sites like this one to help out There are still people living here We fixed their windows Unfortunately they’re living in an unsafe building Among them Oleg a factory worker I’ll sleep at home tonight I don’t want to bother my friend though He said I was welcome to stay To be honest I don’t think I’ve really taken on board what happened He shows me how the shattered glass reached his cupboard on the far wall as he was sleeping right by the window I was saved by a curtain hanging here which literally wrapped up 80% of the glass as it fell on me But I only realized that later when I came back home and it was light Life goes on for the survivors of this attack and nearly 3 million more KV residents all uncomfortably aware of what this shows that Ukraine’s capital is getting more vulnerable

This year has seen a marked uptick in successful Russian strikes on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv. Civilian casualties in the city are no longer a rarity – with the most recent strike killing at least 28 people. Most of these were residents of a single apartment block, where a whole staircase was destroyed. Yet as our correspondent Gulliver Cragg found, many residents of the adjacent staircases are still living there – despite their fear, and the broken windows.
