  37. Warning your target about impending airstrikes is common. There have been several other times where the US has conducted airstrikes and they warned the target nation a short time beforehand. Your beef is with the country’s leadership more than its rank-and-file troops. Generally-speaking, the goal is to eliminate the enemy’s ability to make war by destroying materiel, not kill the people if you don’t have to. That’s how wars last for generations.

    In a situation like this where you are striking an enemy you aren’t at war with, you want to give them enough time to get their people out. If you destroy their stuff, they may respond in kind, tit for tat but stuff can be replaced. If you kill their people, especially civilians… It’s worth noting that Iran also allegedly gave the US warning before their response attack against our airbase (and I know it has come up before, both ways) so maybe there’s something to it.
