They don’t truly swim, they sort of float, but have no intention or propulsion.
I am not a marine biologist, I am a cat
they float
To be fair, they do drift with the current rather than swim.
I can confirm
Jellyfish do not Swim
on land (where the sign is)
There are definitely Jellyfish, and sometimes even Portugese Men O’War in UK waters.
Bloody idiots, jellyfish can’t read so why the sign?
Whoever put the sign up is pretty sure of themselves what with the emphasis and all that. Maybe they know better than us?
Jelly fish, eh?
Do I bring custard or chips?
Sent this to a marine biologist friend, who confirmed that yes, Jellyfish do swim.
Then looked up the definition of swimming, given as “the sport or activity of propelling oneself through water using the limbs”. Google also then confirms that Jellyfish don’t have limbs. So now I don’t know what to think.
Fish also don’t have limbs. Do fish even swim? Edit: phew, ok so fins and tails also count. I was worried this would be one of those “water isn’t wet” technicalities.
It would be spiteful, to put a jellyfish in a trifle.
Perhaps they just bob with style?
I have a Master’s in Marine Biology, so I am officially master of the oceans 🌊. Not only do jellyfish swim but they may have figured out how to make signs.
Swim better than that gobby sign.
Do crabs think fish are flying?
Wasn’t this on an Attenborough program, that they come under planktons so don’t actually swim, they just sort of float and go where the currents take them
I mean there is only one way to find out….
They just sort of float about, the lazy arses.
I think we can all agree that they fucking hurt if they tag you.
The sea was angry that day my friends…
They don’t swim in the conventional sense they float on the tide or pulse for propulsion
Firstly, I am not a marine biologist. Secondly, they can swim.
Only Warning jellyfish can’t swim. Normal ones can.
This also kind of implies they might be just be casually walking about.
Looks like its just the one
They dont
They just get dragged around by the current
Its why jellyfish aquariums have rounded corners
I was on a road trip across Scotland a few years ago. Came across a beautiful beach on a lovely sunny day. Shoes off and shorts came on. Tide was low so I was gleefully jogging to the ocean and came across the most perfect spherical rock to jump off of. It was not a rock. It was very upsetting
Isn’t that an Alien?
According to an anime called Jellyfish Can’t Swim in the Night, they can’t swim at night.
If floating motionless underwater counts as swimming then I was a great swimmer as a toddler. Not sure why my parents were in such a panic.
There’s a sign near me that says:
“Cattle – please shut the gate”
They’ve got some bloody clever cows.
I thought it was a sign telling jellyfish not to swim. Like “oi jellyfish, you best not swim, this is your final warning lads” kind of message
But there is no redline going across the circle so they do swim! Or would that mean no jellyfish? This damn sign.

They do swim. Trust me, I’m a marine expert
Another lie from big jellyfish.

Jury’s is still out on Jellys, though.
Do we need em?
[According to this BBC article they have increased in numbers by 32%](https://www.discoverwildlife.com/animal-facts/marine-animals/jellyfish-sightings-increasing-uk) so there could be a fair amount that may come in up the estuary possibly? ( assuming it’s an estuary )
