On May 1, 2025, Trump threatened countries with “secondary sanctions” & refusal to conduct business with the US, if anybody purchased Iranian oil. Less than two months later, on June 24, 2025, Trump said it’s okay to purchase Iranian oil. Why is Trump promoting Iranian oil sales?

  8. Because he wants cheap oil. It’s the economy stupid, and the economies the world around still run on cheap oil (and will continue so for the next decade or two, even if we pull all stops towards decarbonisation). Same reason he told Ukraine to lay off Russian oil processing.

    To a degree, a proper sustained drop in oil prices will hurt Russian finances far worse than Iranian ones.

Aside from the general assumption that there is no real long-term strategy when it comes to Iran, which might very well be true, I think someone looking for a silver lining might take this as an attempt by Trump to ameliorate Iran’s situation. Trump believes he got what he wanted and wants Iran to be onboard with that. Opening up some cash flows for them might help Iran and the current regime save face a bit domestically.

    A tremendous number of people are in denial about this. His brain was broken from drugs in the 70s and 80s. He is an extremely old man now. He can barely stand during press interviews and often has to sit behind a desk. He very, very clearly has no idea what he is talking about half the time, and this is way beyond what it was like in his 1st admin, where he was just clueless and stupid.

    These are not plans, these are not clever distractions, there is no 4D chess.

    The man is deep in senility. He’s going to be president for 4 years, it’s barely been 5 months so far.

  25. To be fair, if Iranian oil flows, it should reduce the income that the Russians can get for their oil products, so this latest action might benefit Ukraine

  34. Because Trump is rightfully pissed at Israel, this is the first sign I’ve seen that it might not just be for show.

    I know everyone in this sub hates Iran, they were forced into partnership with Russia after decades of brutal sanctions by the US, which were designed to crush their economy and destabilize their government. They had nowhere else to turn to keep themselves afloat and can’t really be blamed for this geopolitical game. Israel brought on those sanctions as part of their plan to destroy Iran, and turn in into another Iraq.

  35. To try and stop Iran from closing a straight in which something like 30% of the world’s oil passes through. Which will absolutely cause increases in gas’s prices in the United States. A subject which he has been lying about since he took office already. He will not be able to falsely claim sub $2 gasoline if this occurs. Which… frankly he shouldn’t be able to do anyway.
