Gotta ask here- isn’t this thing just to make nato independent of the us?
That Kind of reinforces to the argument that trump made- that the us is paying way too much for nato, and that other countries should not rely on the us.
Yeah it seems like a waste for Canada, but the EU definitely needs to make some sacrifices to rearm themselves properly. The only downside to the EU rearming themselves is that we may end up seeing another intra-European war at some point – that was the one benefit of keeping the disparate nations weak and protected by the US, it kept the peace. But I’m still in favor of them being self-sufficient rather than relying on us to save them from other superpowers.
Whining about cost when your country borders an openly hostile super power with the strongest military in the history of the world, who is already working to destroy your economy to force your integration into said hostile super power? Does he think he’s going to fight off the US for cheap?
Imagine Ukraine in 2013 whining that their defense was too expensive.
As a Canadian I think canada should permanently leave NATO and any other military agreements and become a non military state like Sweden was for so long. It’s ridiculous we should even spend 1% when we aren’t or shouldn’t be in any wars, don’t have any neighbors looking to truly invade (5% in NATO won’t stop an america looking to invade) and have no access to nuclear weapons.
