Taha Zouheir spent over a year on the run before he was arrested in Spain.

WASHINGTON — After nearly two years on the run, a man connected to a summer 2023 shooting in Arlington has been arrested.

On Tuesday, the Arlington County Police Department announced the arrest of 36-year-old Taha Zouheir. According to police, Zouheir was located in Spain and taken into custody earlier this year.

On June 4, 2023, police were called to a parking lot in the 3000 block of Wilson Blvd. just after 2 a.m. for reports of a shooting. When officers arrived, they found a man suffering from gunshot wounds.

First responders rendered aid and took the victim to the hospital. At the time of the shooting, the victim’s wounds were believed to be non-life-threatening. It is unclear what his current condition is.

A preliminary investigation showed that Zouheir and the victim got into an argument. Zouheir then allegedly followed the victim into the parking lot and shot him. He left the scene on his motorcycle.

Once police identified Zouheir as the suspect, they learned he had fled the country in the days following the shooting.

Arlington Police worked with federal authorities to coordinate with Spanish officials to have Zouheir taken into custody. In June, following months of legal proceedings, Zouheir was extradited back to the United States.

Zouheir is being charged with use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, malicious wounding, and attempted first-degree murder.

His first court hearing has not been scheduled at this time.
