Quality of life and low living costs are just some of the reasons why many American retirees choose to move to Spain, according to the NY Post. Other factors include the climate and the cuisine.
The website covered a study published by Global Citizen Solutions about the top 10 destinations for Americans seeking a new place to retire. It cited Madrid as “one of the best cities to live and work in” and highlighted Spain’s low crime rate.
Approximately 38,000 Americans live in Spain, according to figures from the country’s National Institute of Statistics. Many of them are retirees motivated by the first two factors mentioned, aiming to live in a peaceful environment and enjoy life to the fullest.
Healthcare is also particularly important. In the Healthcare Index, Spain ranks ninth, behind Taiwan, South Korea, and the Netherlands in the top three spots. Spain is the third European country in the top ten, along with Finland and Austria.
Culture and leisure, other factors working in its favor
Spain’s cultural and leisure offerings also help attract thousands of retirees from around the world, as does its location, which allows tourists to travel easily to other countries. The latest ranking by the World Tourism Organization placed Spain as the second most visited country in the world, only behind France.
In summary, Spain’s warm, mild, and hot climate—especially during the summer months—ensures a calmer lifestyle compared to colder regions, where health can suffer more. This is another attractive factor for Americans.
