Better to admit you fucked this up than to try and argue it at this point. He tried to blame others and dodge blame it just made him look foolish.
Obviously the political side of this wants you to argue so they can embarrass you. Hard to do that if you just admit you are utterly incompetent and any and all trust that was put in you was misplaced.
This is very good evidence that just because you are a competent academic it does not mean you are a competent administrator.
I think higher education in the UK would really benefit if academics weren’t running senior management.
