This really makes me angry. This guy lives on a farm in a village in the Berner Oberland. He has no idea what it's like to live in a densely populated area. He also knows that, if cities have to fight this with an initiative rather than a referendum, the Ständemehr applies.

I mean, the man has been a petrol industry lobbyist his whole career why stop now? So many of Rösti’s positions can be explained by who paid him to represent their interest.
And they say they are for a federal state…
Yeah I agree with you that 30 km/h (especially at night) is undoubtedly one of the most beneficial changes in terms of traffic management in cities.
We have mostly 30 kmh zones around us and I love it – and I own a car. There are many kids and too many cars
Ah yes, Ölbert FTW! /s (just in case)
It’ll never happen. Long live 30 zones.
The anti common sense ideology of these folks is so… “stossend” 🤬
What makes him think that 50km/h is actually safe? Does he ever drive in zones where there’s a lot of kids? Or in general a lot of people? What the hell
I don’t have access to the article but it seems like it’s not a general rule. OP, please clarify the details. Your title seems misleading.
Fuck these assholes who think reducing traffic hazards is not worth them being very mildly inconvenienced.
They argue with vehicles with blue lights. I am not a pro, but a volley firefighter. So I drive with emergency lights, through 50 and 30 zones.
I did not realize much of a difference.
It would be nice to hear from someone working at EMS, police or professional firefighting.
I drive a fast car. I really appreciate 30kmh zones and am advocating to introduce more where we live. These kind of moves are very populist and resonate with a certain type of voter.
I wonder whether driving 30 is less noisy than 50. most drivers seem to downshift in 30 zones, so the engine and exhaust seem louder (at least to me). Electric cars are forced to make a sound until up to 45, which would increase noise too, as there would only be the tire and wind noise left above 50.
Noise-wise I think that 30 is a loss. Traffic-safety on the other hand would improve. Especially in zones with kids. In my town they want to introduce a general 30 zone, but people are collecting signatures against it. Especially the local businesses seem to be against it.
Edit: thanks for the links in the responses. Interesting reads. Several factors to look at, and quite different results of the two studies/observations.
Typical SVP, direct democracy is only important if it benefits them…
Train noise is louder in our neighbourhood when trains rush through the towns. Why can’t they also be downregulated? A few lost minutes don’t matter.
It makes you angry, but I think that‘s a good idea. Welcome to democracy, where different opinions are allowed.
