The mayor of the Kassandra municipality in northern Greece has reportedly been irrevocably suspended for allowing the operation of an amusement park in her municipality where a 19-year-old lost his life on a ride.
Mayor Anastasia Halkia was found guilty of dereliction of duty by a local administration disciplinary board, a decision she appealed to the Council of State (CoS), Greece’s highest administrative court.
The formal ruling by the CoS is expected to be published and delivered to the mayor on Monday.
Nineteen-year-old Yiannis Kabailis lost his life after a carnival ride collapsed.
A police and judicial investigation later discovered that the amusement park, set up in the Pefkohori coastal resort, lacked proper licensing by the relevant municipality. Nevertheless, no obstacle was placed for its operation.
In fact, a month earlier, Greek Police had warned the Kassandra municipality a month before the accident that necessary licensing had not been completed.
