I didn't take a vacation this year or last and I worked since January last year. My contract or anyone mention that I had to use all my vacation time or I'll "lose the pay". I worked for 3 other places and they never discounted my pay before.
They mention this as being normal, is it? I'm about to call the union as soon as I can tomorrow but want a more general opinion before.

Should only be normal if you work a specific % for the company as far as I know, you’re normally required to take 4 weeks of vacation a year if you work 100% for example (in most cases)
It’s the companies responsibility to make sure you take holiday.
Your main employer is legally required to give you vacation and make sure you take them off. If you haven’t book holiday and they haven’t ask you to, then they can be required to pay you or move (up to 12 days) to the following year.
We need more information about your employment situation, are these all part time jobs and are you paid hourly or salary?
You are required by law to take vacation every year. It is in fact mandatory. This is from Ferieloven §5:
Arbeidsgiver plikter å sørge for at arbeidstaker gis feriefritid på 25 virkedager hvert ferieår. **Arbeidstaker plikter å avvikle feriefritiden hvert år**,jf. likevel denne paragraf nr. 5, § 7 nr. 3 første ledd og § 9 nr. 1 og 2.
You are legaly obligated to take vacation, from altin.no:
Arbeidstaker har også plikt til å ta ut ferie. All lovbestemt ferie som ikke er tatt ut i løpet av ferieåret, skal overføres til påfølgende ferieår. Ferien skal tas ut i feriedager, ikke penger.
Translation:
Employees are also obliged to take vacation. All statutory vacation that is not taken during the vacation year must be transferred to the following vacation year. Vacation must be taken in vacation days, not money.
So why on earth are you working all the time?
My employer makes us take minimum 3 of our 5 weeks holiday in the period of mid June to mid August.
We get the vacation money 15. June and the next pay in the end of July. When we take our holiday does not impact the salary we get paid in the end of July. Nor the following payments.
They do however deduct our 5th week from the vacation money. So we get full salary paid when we take it ( usually in November og December )
If last year was your first year working in Norway you were not required to take out vacation as you didn’t have any feriepenger saved up. Now you do!
I believe you can move 2 weeks of vacation until year. Thats how my company works atleast.
Ok guys ,I think I understand. I’m forced by law to take all my vacations, sadly it’s a bit short notice but I’ll make the effort and not go to work.
To be honest, this looks like the MANY replies I have sent all of last week. My team also has answered this a looot over the last week.
And yes, this is entirely correct, this is a way to make sure you spend vacation, and to ensure your employer gives you vacation. The vacation pay is to cover the loss of pay during vacation. In stead of calculating month over month based on actual spend of days, deducting those and then paying the cash equivalent in vacation pay, the law opens for employers to do it all in one go, just like you are describing.
So yes, this is very much as it should be, and you have e earned vacation pay to cover the loss of pay this month.
