According to Mercadona, “this logistics block, in the construction of which more than 700 national companies participated, supplies the 63 stores that Mercadona currently has in Portugal,” complementing the one in Póvoa de Varzim (Porto), which opened in 2019.

“Currently, Mercadona’s logistics in Portugal is provided by a team of 1,000 people”.

The Spanish company also said that “it began construction of the Almeirim block in 2022, on a 440,000 m2 plot of land, with a total built area of ​​around 120,000 m2, consisting of a 49,000 m2 cold storage warehouse, a 50,000 m2 dry storage warehouse, a general services and office building and a store workshop”.

This logistics block also created 630 new jobs, it said. Mercadona also recalled that in 2019 it opened its first logistics block in Póvoa de Varzim, representing an investment of 60 million euros, and in 2022 it increased “the logistics capacity of this block with a new 12,000 m2 warehouse and an additional investment of 25.5 million euros”.

Mercadona opened its first supermarket in 2019 in Canidelo, Vila Nova de Gaia, and has invested a total of 1.095 billion euros in Portugal since that year, generating 7,000 new jobs.

“The internationalization project in Portugal has allowed Mercadona to get to know new national producers and integrate them into its network of suppliers, from whom it has purchased more than 4.55 billion euros since 2019,” he concluded.
