Hiya! Hope you're all having a fabulous Tuesday. Or maybe I should call it fab-loo-lous given the wee thing I want to tell you

So I was at a visit to Belfast Wastewater Treatment Plant, and it's really crazy how much stuff ends up flushed down the toilet that really shouldn't be

The manager from Northern Ireland Water giving us the tour said that if things like wet wipes or sanitary items or cotton pads end up at the works they get removed using a mechanical screen and end up in the big skip in the 1st picture

In the 2nd picture you can see a screen on the overflow channel. This is used when there's a lot more flow into the plant, and this overflows to the storm tanks. There are 5 huge ones at Belfast treatment plant.

Look at the state of the screen though!!! Someone climbs into that and clean the screen by hand. The ground has a layer of yucky mucky sludge too. You couldn't pay me enough lol

And in the 3rd pic you see some of the more bizarre things that have ended up at the plant. Minions are bit crap like, but don't flush them. Same goes for Spiderman he's Peter Parker not Peeter Paper.

The message they told us was super handy. "Only flush the 3Ps Pee, Poo, or Paper.

If it isn't pee poo or paper don't flush it bag it and put it in the bin

The manager also told us that the contract for those skips costs 10s of thousand of pounds and that's just for Belfast. We're literally flushing away money by flushing stupid things.

He also told us that sometimes wipes and stuff can cause pumps that pump sewage to the treatment plant to break, and those can cause thousands to repair or replace, and sometimes sewers can get blocked by wipes and stuff which can lead to flooding which is rotten.

Isn't it crazy what people flush down the loo?!

  5. Highly recommend everyone should do a beach clean. Most of it is cotton bud sticks, “flushable” wipes and pads. Curses on those who decided they could indicate those rotten things are safe for flushing!

  7. I used to do the security systems in the NI Water sites. Is this the one in Dargan/Duncrue? Did you get a tour of the storm drain that’s cut away into the ground? It’s a seriously impressive structure. Though I don’t think it would be part of most tours.

  8. I wish bidets were a more common thing in N.I, really reduce the need for paper.

    When I get my own gaff I’ll be splashing out for a Japanese toilet, those things are fucking great.

  18. That’s actually pretty cool, it appears the sewage system is also a smelly toy collection system. I’m sure there’s been a few wedding rings through there..
