North Korea to send as many as 30,000 troops to bolster Russia’s forces, Ukrainian officials say

1. North Korea is set to triple the number of its troops fighting for Russia along the front lines with Ukraine, sending an additional 25,000 to 30,000 soldiers to assist Moscow, according to an intelligence assessment from Ukrainian officials.

   The troops may arrive in Russia in the coming months, according to the assessment seen by CNN, adding to the 11,000 sent in November who helped repel Ukraine’s incursion into Russia’s Kursk region. Around 4,000 of those North Korean soldiers were killed or injured in the deployment, according to Western officials, yet Pyongyang’s cooperation with Moscow has since bloomed.

   The Ukrainian assessment seen by CNN says the Russian ministry of defense is capable of providing “needed equipment, weapons and ammunition” with the aim of “further integration to Russian combat units.” The document adds “there is a great possibility” the North Korean troops will be engaged in combat in parts of Russian-occupied Ukraine “to strengthen the Russian contingent, including during the large-scale offensive operations.”

   The assessment, from Ukraine’s defense intelligence agency, also says there are signs that Russian military aircraft are being refitted to carry personnel, reflecting the vast undertaking of moving tens of thousands of foreign troops across Russian Siberia, which shares a border with North Korea in its far southwest.

2. So uh, if those North Koreans end up going into occupied Ukraine and we in the west don’t do a serious response we may as well commit to Russia attacking a NATO member in the near future. Like just absolutely 0 actual meaningful action to convince Putin that his endless escalation has consequences.

   Thing is earlier there was at least the argument to be made that Russia can choose who and what and when is inside of their own internationally recognized borders, which is what the North Koreans are currently.

   Now if they go into occupied Ukraine and the west again shows how terrified they are of escalation and getting more involved all we’re signaling is how divided and weak we are; which all but guarantees Russias further imperialism in Europe.

3. It’s a but like boiling the frog. At some point China will join the war in a similarly low key way, and we will effectively be in WW3. Question is whether Europe and the US reacts in time.

5. The axes of evil helping each other out invading their neighbors. South Korea and Taiwan need to be prepared for invasion by not just one, but a bunch of countries in the name of “unification”.

7. Highly doubt they will be leaving official Russian territory. This was claimed during the initial deployment of North Korean forces and turned out to be false. Russia is sensitive to international perception and has shown that it doesn’t want to take the risk of involving foreign forces in Ukraine.

   Most likely their role will be to help guard the borders in Sumy and Kursk, since Syrsky keeps attempting another breakthrough there. That’ll help free up some of the border units to act as an extra reserve for wherever they chose – whether the ongoing push in Dnipro and Zaporizhzhia, or opening up an extra axis against Pokrovsk.
