- How long does it take to get to Trolltunga? We are fine with hiking back in rain. We are average hikers, made it to Pulpit rock in about 1.5 hours. We are also from northeast US so we are familiar with trails being rock scrambles.
- Should we just start at 4am? Or earlier?
- Is it okay/safe to hike it while raining? We have all the waterproof hiking gear and clothes

Start at 3 am. to get the sun coming up. Get back with only light spray water.
3-5 Celsius and rain is not fun.
If you get any delay at all, the rain is gonna make it miserable and somewhat dangerous. You traverse a lot of bare rock which becomes slippery when wet, and depending on the level of rain, you might have lowered visibility.
Well .. it is summer. What did you expect?
Seems like a standard norwegian summer
It’s way longer tan Pulpit Rock, around 5 – 6 hours if you have a steady pace. Can be done faster, but it’s a hike for the view after all.
I might honestly leave it for another day. If you go very early, There is a risk, albeit small, of frost or ice. If you go later, there is a risk of slippery rocks & limited view.
If Friday is your only chance, I would go as early as possible.
Wool? It’s gonna be cold and pretty miserable when it starts raining. Don’t become a statistic, there is no shame in turning around.
Do you have a car? How about forgetting Trolltunga and instead hike up to Buarbreen glacier falls? BTW: Don’t stand under the glacier, follow path on the side! It will rain there as well, but here the experience is being close to the glacier, not overwhelming peak-on-peak views that are easily hidden by clouds.
I have no knowledge about Trolltunga, But after looking up the hike, its considered pretty steep and “hard”. Going up when its wet is ok-ish, but going down is not fun, anywhere. Im sure it’s doable if you are sensible and fit, but as you said, I wouldn’t risk it for the rest of your trip. Hiking in Norway is honestly spectacular anywhere you go, so do something else or chill for your trip to Lofoten.
Enjoy Norway!
I would not go in that weather, if there is fog too it will probably disrupt the view.
And to be honest, Trolltunga is a bit anti climax. Parts of the trail to the actual site had way better views than Trolltunga itself.
ah great summer weather.
