A parent has criticised a decision by an education trust to prohibit skirts in its revised school uniform policy.
Northern Education Trust – which runs six secondary schools across Teesside including North Shore Academy, Manor Community Academy and Freebrough Academy – has contacted parents detailing the alterations to its school uniform policy, which will take effect from September 2026, reports Teesside Live.

What about kids with sensory issues who struggle to wear trousers???
Why though? Like what’s the point of banning then
I agree it’s unnecessary, but we’ve really got to stop throwing the term misogyny around at every opportunity. It’s not misogyny, if anything it’s political correctness.
It’s getting to a point where people will roll their eyes whenever they hear the term, which will make it harder to call out genuine misogyny.
It’s so the girls get to suffer as much as the boys in the hot weather!
Equality
Interesting decision from the trust.
But if I say one thing, school should be about learning, and throughout my time at school, “skirt length” was a long drawn over conversation and to be honest, took way too much time which detracted from learning.
Though these schools better have good AC units in each and every space.. and I’d put good money that is not likely the case
Finally some sharia
I work in an education trust, I know how this will go down. Its happened before.
Despite what people think, girls want to wear skirts. They will keep coming in with Skirts on. The schools will start sending them home but then settle for behaviour points. Parents will complain and say the school is punishing their child for expressing themselves and say they can’t afford to buy new uniform. Girls will keep coming in with Skirts on. The ban will then be lifted with the compromise being girls can wear trousers if they choose.
This happened in my trust with fake eyelashes of all things. They tried to ban it, girls kept coming in with them, they tried to punish the girls and the parents made it about expression and mental health. The trust backed down.
In this entitled world, parents have all the power in education.
There is of course a good health reason why females have traditionally worn skirts/dresses/loose fitting apparel.
With the introduction of tights and trousers for women came a rise in yeast infections.
Skirts help ventilate.
God when I was at school we were DESPERATE to wear trousers but it wasn’t allowed until year 10. Why are these rules always so absolute either way… personally I would welcome it removing a lot of early teenage angst over exposing your legs and therefore your grooming choices but I don’t pretend to know what the current teens think about it.
So, as a kid I did wear skirts, because I liked them and then suddenly one day grew very conscious and wore shorts underneath.
Still, girls will go to school in skirts, but I don’t think banning them is correct. They should be if a certain length, and teachers should be protected and allowed to being up any issues..
Or, prohibit skirts which don’t have shorts.
A parent? Just one?
None of the daughters of a certain cohort of parents will be wearing skirts, short or otherwise. This is for the protection of a different cohort of parents and daughters.
Seems like a sensible move if it cuts down on pointless dress code debates and lets everyone focus on actual learning. Though I do hope they’ve considered comfort, especially during summer months.
Some commenters seem to not realise that some schools still make it compulsory for girls to wear skirts (and other gender uniform differences). Everyone wearing trousers is definitely better than girls having to wear skirts, but everyone having the option would be nice.
A fantastic idea.
As a male teacher, it irks me we’ve been told we’ve got to enforce it but fortunately our SLT has a decent work – we enforce tucked shirts.
Generally, the girls with rolled up skirts know tucking their shirt wills then reveal they’ve got their skirts rolled up.
Seems like a good idea. Some girls wear skirts so short you can almost see their underwear. Trousers are way more practical. I’d have the option of some nicely tailored long shorts for summer so it’s not too hot (boys and girls)
What have uniforms got to do with learning, it’s an antiquated form of control. You don’t wear them in further or higher education. They are rarely used on the continent, how do they help learning?
It’s just a racket for the one place in town that got the license to sell them. They should just scrap them and worry about education, not what people wear.
This feels a bit, girls are not as important so just make wear the boys uniform.
Girls = skirts. Boys = trousers. Simples.
How about, just hear me out, girls get wear whichever they want depending on the weather and their comfort?
inshallah
