Denmark is taking the reins of the EU presidency at a tumultuous time, with migration and trade in focus

EU presidencies often only command ordinary citizens’ attention via droves of big black limousines being driven at high speed, accompanied by police or army outriders festooned with flashing blue lights.

Popular doubts about such vulgar shows of taxpayer-funded excess are often compounded by police who will rarely shut two streets when they can – and do – shut down two dozen at a minimum, thereby compounding urban traffic gridlock.
