A Polish vigilante group is apparently obstructing deportations at the German border. According to a media report, the group forced an Afghan man to walk back to Brandenburg from the Polish side of the border via a bridge.

The dispute over border controls between Germany and Poland threatens to escalate. According to information from Der Spiegel, an incident occurred this week at the German-Polish border in Guben, Brandenburg. Federal police officers attempted to send an 18-year-old Afghan back to Poland via the city bridge. However, according to an internal government report, the deportation failed due to a Polish vigilante group. Suspected members of the right-wing extremist ‘Movement for the Protection of Borders’ (in Polish ‘Ruch Obrony Granic’) are said to have urged the Afghan to return to Germany via the bridge.

According to the report, the federal police contacted their Polish colleagues and asked them to take the young man into custody. Shortly afterwards, a border guard patrol appeared on the Polish side. The German police sent the Afghan back to Poland via the Guben city bridge. But once again, the vigilante group demanded that the 18-year-old turn back – apparently without the Polish border guards intervening.

The federal police urged them to back down. But the commander of the Polish border guards is said to have refused to let the Afghan cross the bridge. According to information obtained by ‘Spiegel,’ the federal police later sent the 18-year-old across the border to Poland in Bad Muskau, about 60 kilometres away. There was neither a vigilante group nor Polish border guards on site.

  5. To be fair, most of those migrants entered the EU via Belarus. They usually reach Germany through Poland. They somehow do not want to stay in Poland. Some do not even stop at Germany. They go to France and then into the UK.
