Friday’s matches in Switzerland saw wins for Denmark and Germany in Group C.

Germany 2 – 0 Poland

Record eight time champions DFB-Frauen kicked their European Championship off with a 2-0 win over Poland in St Gallen.

Jule Brand’s superb second half left foot strike got Germany on the way before she set up Lea Schüller to head home goal number two and secure the victory against a Polish side making their debut at the Euros.

Christian Wück, Germany head coach: “It was a tough, hard-fought victory. Poland made it very, very difficult for us. They dropped back and sat very deep. We knew we had to be patient to score our goals, which we did in the second half. We’re happy with the result, and we know that we can do better than that.”

Germany: Berger; Gwinn (Wamser 40), Minge, Knaak, Linder; Senß (Lohmann 70), Nüsken; Brand, Dallmann (Freigang 70), Bühl (Cerci 85); Schüller (Hoffmann 70)

Denmark 0 – 1 Sweden

Filippa Angeldahl got the only goal of the game from a Kosovare Asllani assist, on her 200th international cap, in Geneva on Friday afternoon.

Filippa Angeldahl, Player of the Match: “I feel a mix of joy and relief. There are so many nerves when you start a tournament so it was a wonderful feeling to score that first goal. It is really important to win the first match, and give you a platform for the rest of the finals. It really instills some confidence.”
