During a recent meeting, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda discussed important issues related to supporting Ukraine and increasing pressure on Russia with his German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier. This information was confirmed by Nausėda himself.
“I discussed with President Steinmeier close cooperation in defense, support for Ukraine, pressure on Russia, and strategic investments in military mobility. Germany remains a key ally in ensuring security, resilience, and peace in Europe.”
– Gitanas Nausėda
Steinmeier emphasized that the decision to station a German brigade in Lithuania is an important commitment by Berlin to ensuring the security of this country.
“By deploying a German brigade in Lithuania, we are making a long-term promise: your security is our security. This new brigade confirms our mutual responsibility and demonstrates our dedication to the Alliance. We know that whoever defends Lithuania defends Europe and European values.”
– Frank-Walter Steinmeier
In the summer of 2022, Berlin committed to deploying a military unit in Lithuania the size of a brigade. Overall, about five thousand German military personnel and civilians are planned to be transferred, some of whom will arrive with their families.
It is expected that most of the brigade will be relocated to Lithuania by 2026, and according to German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, it will be fully combat-ready by 2027.
The permanent base for the German brigade has been designated as the military training ground in the area of the towns Rudninkai and Rukla.
