# Trans youth in focus – Zürich demands: Switzerland should restrict irreversible interventions
FOR MINORS.
Crucial bit of info left out of the headline.
>Konkret geht es jedoch nur um wenig Fälle. 2024 waren es vier Jugendliche, die mit einer Operation ihr Geschlecht angleichen liessen.
This is a complete non-issue. The medical and psychological due diligence is high and appropriate.
This is nothing but manipulative political bullshit, made in USA, brought to you by SVP.
Please stop voting for these clowns. We need politicians that treat their own voters with respect and don’t constantly try to con them with bullshit like this.
Like forcing people into a purberty they don’t want? Puberty blocker are safe in cis cases, but apparently if it’s for “transgender” people it becomes bad?
SVP again…
Fuck off SVP.
Anyone that votes for these hateful bigots should be treated as fascists before switzerland ends up like America.
Making this rather long with a mix of rant and information. For context, I am a trans woman who got vaginoplasty at the age of 30.
Yay another uninformed politician trying to regulate what trans people can do with their body instead of having it be a proper medical examination. And here I was, happy that Switzerland has some of the best medical support for trans people of all ages in the world. (I hope so so much it stays this way). Sure we are talking about minors here, but it is not like minors just go “I want this” and get it. They get psychotherapy and have to get either a yes from their guardian or have a medical specialist declare it an emergency and even that only after a therapist generally gave their ok.
It was literally 4 cases in 2024 for minors. 4! Yes absolutely horrific. How can we make sure that the specialized needs for a select few minors that underwent psychotherapy and ended up deciding to go for surgery, do not receive the care they need and instead have to suffer miserably until they are 18 because their life circumstances change so much between 16 and 18. (You can not do most surgeries much younger than that at all. Maybe some at 14.) Making these people’s lives more terrible is more important than discussing relevant legislation to help aaaallll the other people in the Canton of zurich. These 4 per year, yeah.
Gender affirming surgery has the lowest regret rates of all surgeries. I myself (although of age) got vaginoplasty. Many if not most trans youth that know at an early age and are not able to transition socially and or medically, attempt suicide before they even are 18.
While most of this care is more reversible (Puberty blockers/social transition and to some degree HRT) surgeries are necessary for those with severe gender dysphoria. And albeit really rare, it is a life or death situation to them.
Heck, right now, I would rather die than go off HRT or even detransition socially. Now that I know what happiness feels like, I can’t go back to being that pile of misery. I can absolutely empathize with teens that got surgery. This care is important and the TGNS is simply right. Increase therapeutic support so that we can better understand whether someone needs the surgery now (because there are major drawbacks to having some surgeries very early on. With e.g. more complications or more difficulty achieving desired results for some of the surgeries.) or can wait until they have developed more (which often isn’t even at 18 but rather 20-24).
People love to think we just stumble into this decision, but pretty much any person faced with such a decision will overthink it for months or years, with so many people telling them “nooooo don’t do it, it is permanent!” simply because they have no idea what it is like to be trans. Getting this surgery was one of the best decisions of my life.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask. I know quite a bit mtf surgeries (because… Yeah we have a lot of options for our surgeries) and not quite as much about ftm surgeries but I can probably find good resources for that if need be.
