Kaufland Romania reported a turnover of €3.97 billion in the period between March 2024 to February 2025, driven by its focus on fresh products, variety, and affordable prices.

The German retailer’s contribution to the Romanian economy amounted to €2.8 billion, representing approximately 0.8% of the national GDP, according to the company’s socio-economic impact study for the financial year 2024, conducted in association with KPMG.

Kaufland Romania operates 192 stores, two logistics centres, and two administrative headquarters, and is aiming to expand its presence to 250 hypermarkets in Romania and the Republic of Moldova by 2030.

In the past year, Kaufland invested €157 million in Romania for acquiring and upgrading fixed assets, including a new logistics warehouse in Iași, its third facility besides existing centres in Ploiești and Turda.

The company also contributed €321 million to the state budget through taxes and duties.

Local Business

Kaufland has pledged to support local businesses, allocating 81% of its total supplier spending, or €2.93 billion, to approximately 2,500 Romanian suppliers.

This means that 65 cents of every euro spent at Kaufland cash registers directly benefits Romanian businesses.

For every €1 of direct economic value generated by Kaufland Romania, another €3.37 is generated in the local economy through indirect and induced contributions.

Marco Hößl, general manager of Kaufland Romania and the Republic of Moldova, emphasised the company’s commitment to supporting society and its sustainable investments in people, local partnerships, and communities.

Kaufland has consistently demonstrated a commitment to sustainability through various initiatives, including reducing plastic and food waste, establishing packaging collection infrastructure, equipping commercial spaces with photovoltaic systems, supporting sustainable agriculture, and implementing environmental protection measures.

As a result, Kaufland Romania has been recognised as the most transparent and performing company in Romanian retail for sustainability for seven consecutive years by the Romania Corporate Sustainability & Transparency (CST) Index rating.
