WASHINGTON (TNND) — Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., on Tuesday labeled Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a “war criminal” amid his visit to the White House.
Israel’s leader during his visit announced he had nominated President Donald Trump for a Nobel Peace Prize for facilitating a ceasefire between Israel and Iran. Despite this achievement, Sen. Sanders said Netanyahu’s presence in the U.S. is an unwelcome one.
“As President Trump & Congress roll out the red carpet for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, let’s remember that Netanyahu has been indicted as a war criminal by the International Criminal Court for overseeing the systematic killing and starvation of civilians in Gaza,” he wrote via X.
The senator also issued a video message in which he reminded followers of Netanyahu’s involvement in the conflict in Gaza.
“These war crimes continue to this day,” he said in the clip. “Netanyahu’s extremist government has killed more than 57,000 Palestinians and wounded almost 135,000, 60% of whom are women, children or elderly people.”
“Hundreds of thousands of people are starving after Israel prevented any aid from entering Gaza for nearly three months,” he added. “This has been a catastrophe with near-daily massacres at the new aid distribution sites.”
Trump seemingly paid no attention to Sen. Sanders’s remarks, instead referring to Netanyahu as “the greatest man in the world” while speaking to reporters during a Monday cabinet meeting.
“You have the greatest man in the world to answer that age-old question,” Trump said when asked about a two-state solution in Gaza.
