  1. ***From The Times:***

Up to 50 small boat migrants will be sent back to France each week, starting from next month, under a one-in, one-out returns deal expected to be announced by Sir Keir Starmer and President Macron on Thursday.

The two leaders met in Downing Street on Wednesday as the final details of the agreement were being hammered out.

The scheme is expected to start with a limited trial in late August and will eventually lead to the return of up to 1,500 migrants by the end of the year, according to sources familiar with the talks.

A maximum of 50 migrants a week would be returned to start with, according to Le Monde. This would equate to just one in 17 migrants arriving on small boats each week.

The scheme would then be scaled up significantly once a pilot had shown “proof of concept”, UK government sources have said

  2. This is a bit of a bewildering policy to me.

To my reading of the situation European states with high immigration levels are clearly being pressed by a growing demand for significant immigration changes.

It seems like the past few decades the parties have largely promised to limit immigration but regardless of which side wins, the gates stay open and the number of immigrants grows – and that for a number of reasons the boiling point has almost been reached.

So you get these more extremist parties like the AFD and Reform, which imo only exist because people no longer trust the traditional parties word when it comes to immigration. It really seems like the runway is running and out and Labour, CDU, etc. have a last chance to course correct before the far right parties get to do so.

“Ok fine we’ll start deportations…. …but we’re letting in one new immigrant for every one we deport” seems to me a catastrophically dumb attempt to calm the mob.

(And for clarity, there are great moral arguments for immigration. But also, there is a limit to how far you can push some policies until people flip the tables and elect reform or the AFD and I genuinely view that as one of the worst case scenarios here)

  3. Wow incredible, 50 boats and 1,500 by the end of the year. I think 20k plus have already come in and we’re only halfway through the year. This is pathetic.

  4. One in one out. Cool

So what happens when people come here illegally then?

Ermm, well, we can’t deport them so we will ermm, well yes mumble mumble
