  1. Why can’t I buy a box fan anywhere? I have (relatively) square windows, they could fit a square fan, but no one would sell me one!

  2. The NHS should make a coma service so you can escape the heat and wake up in autumn

  3. Praise be to the portable air con I bought last week 🙌

Spending the day holed up inside with the AC on and an extended LOTR marathon.

  4. Very grateful we’re not getting ‘tropical nights’ this heatwave (or so it looks like). Not being able to cool down the house at night almost killed me last time

  5. don’t be me and think walking by the river will in any way help.

    it does not.

  6. Only thing to do is lay in the garden and pretend you’re Ray Winstone in Sexy Beast.

  7. Time to bring out ol’ reliable

“How can it be this hot at midnight…….how’s that’s posibbbbllleee”

  8. Everyone seems to think I’m mad but this works.

Go to your local Boots, buy a hot water bottle.

Fill it about 3/4s and pop in the freezer. take it out at bed time and you’ll have a great nights sleep. I’ve been doing this a few years now and never have those sweaty nights any more. Someone said “ah but it gets frosty on the outside and the mattress gets wet”…. yes, with cool water and not stinky sweat and isn’t the whole bed.

  9. The air conditioner i bought just before that first 40C summer is really paying off, even though i use it like 2 weeks a year

  10. “Have you tried opening a window?”

    -my mother
(Who is on the other side of the world, in the middle of winter and has zero understanding of how shite this place is when it gets like this)

  11. Go browse the entire Tesco freezer and chiller sections, innit.

  12. Buying a fan before the heatwave came has definately paid off

  13. I accidentally bought thick cut bacon. Why does this even exist. Who likes it?

  14. WFH today, got 2 fans next to my desk and one pointing up at my bollocks.

  15. The butter is the perfect consistency for making cakes but it’s absolutely too hot to make a cake. 😢

  16. Got a tower fan yesterday to help keep my cat cool after he struggled in the previous heatwave.

Naturally, he looked at it suspiciously and jogged past it.

  17. Once again the portable air con I purchased 5 years ago coming in clutch.

It remains the best purchase I have ever made. Every year we have 2-3 uncomfortable heat spells and every year it is a non-issue.

  18. I bought AC the other week, never going back.

The dog lays in front of that rather than the gap under my front door where a slight breeze blows.

  19. Got myself a portable AC and while we don’t have the ideal sliding windows for it, it still brought my room down from a sweaty 28°C to a comfy 22°C.

If I had a proper seal (got those crappy crank out windows that open inwards) I reckon the temp would be lower, but I’ll take this over nothing!

  20. Considering going to Aspers Casino tomorrow and playing in a long poker tournament for thr air con.

  21. Fan tips (if you have a window in the room):

If the air outside is cooler than the air inside, put the fan with its back to the window – this will blow the cooler air into the room and lower the room temperature.

If it’s the opposite, do the opposite (fan facing the window) as this will blow the warmer air out and helps lower the temperature in the room

  22. Last night my room was 4 to 5 degrees hotter than outside, any reason as to why?

  23. Am I going mad or is this like our fourth heatwave? It’s not even August yet.

  24. I’ve a portable AC unit. Needs a fabric piece to go across the open window with a hole for the exhaust pipe to hang out. To seal the gap and keep hot air out & cool air in.
Fabric attaches to the window frame with velcro.
Seems like having the window open when not using the AC – so the velcro exposed to sunlight – has caused the glue to melt. So the velcro’s detached itself leaving a gooey mess.

I wish my place had sash windows not these that swing open outwards. That would be easier.

edit: probably going to bin the velcro and gaffer tape it

  25. Gave in and bought a portable ac but only after seeing all of the cheaper ones sell out right before my eyes. The one I bought had a review saying it cost 180 quid and i bought it for almost 250… we will see if it was worth it today

  26. So here goes one month, maybe more, of no sleep, blood alcohol levels so high your pee is fizzy, lots of men not wearing enough clothes, some savage violence (ANGRY MAN TOO HOT!!!) and lots of baffled tourists. Roll on summer 25!

  27. I premptively bought a portable AC last September after last year’s summer, and just checked the price for it on Amazon. It’s gone up by a whopping 150%. Absolutely nuts lol

  28. Are there any parks in SE London where dogs can go in lakes or fountains?

Victoria Park in the east is great for this but water features seem less common south of the river, or are fenced off.
