Another heat wave. How you going to keep cool?

  1. All the doors and windows are open. When it starts warming up in a bit, I’ll close everything up including all the blinds and curtains. That tends to keep the house cool for most of the day.

  2. Working outside, soak my tee-shirt in water and put it back on, uncomfortably cold for thirty seconds but keeps you comfortable for an hour or so

  3. I work outside so I’ll just have to make good use of shade!

  4. Air-to-air heat pump downstairs, set to 20C.

Meanwhile, upstairs gets in the mid 30s. Going up there feels like stepping off a plane in a tropical country.

  5. Portable air con .. so good am thst after few hours at night find myself wanting to get under a thicker duvet

  6. I’ll be abandoning the upstairs of my house and staying downstairs today.

  7. Am going to live in Scotland and enjoy the benefits of natural airconn

  8. Delivering the mail in a van with no air conditioning on an estate with no trees for a company that does little more than say “make sure you drink water”

  9. I’m going to finish work at 12, then go to a beer garden and hope for the best

  10. ‘North facing’ house. Shut down southern front, open up big doors onto decking at back. Also have sail type tarp over deck. Big shady garden.

Not too bad until mid afternoon for a couple of hours.

Yesterday evening was a bit torrid though.

Son and his family here from Singapore. Always 29-32⁰ there but always air-conditioning and ceiling fans so they’re also having to cope. Fan on in grandaughters’ bedrooms.

Don’t know how those in top floor flats with those metal dormer roofs are managing.

As a young’un worked in a powder paint factory then in industrial boiler cleaning ( inside ‘cold’ boilers with full haz mat etc). During heat waves that was pretty brutal.

  11. AC, I had a choice between solar panels and an air conditioning unit, sorry environment I’ll do solar next time I have money.

  12. Hot water bottles filled with chilled water work wonders. I have two in the fridge and rotate them as needed. This also works for pets who may be overheating! Also good to chill your bed for bedtime.

  13. Portable AC. Best purchase we ever made for the summer

  14. Im quite lucky as our house is an old thick brick house so our living room is always a lot cooler during the day.
For night I bought a shark ninja fan that has a water misting feature (you are meant to use the mist only outdoors but I sometimes give a quick blast at night) and that thing is great. Only problem is that i’m having to take it to and from work every day as i’ve got no AC at work.

  15. Fight at work with people who refise to use the great AC and open doors/windows

    Gym AC later

Ceiling fans at home after the blinds down all day.

  16. I’m going to comment to my colleagues about the heat all day.

    Say “blimmin ell” occasionally.

    “It’s a bit much”

    “It’s really stuffy”

    “Hopefully it’ll rain soon”

“Have you got air conditioning in your car?”

    Fully stocked for conversation.

  17. My house mate is away for the weekend, I’ve no plans for anyone to arrive, doors are locked.

Yeah I’m swinging free. Cold towel over the shoulders helps as well.

  18. I bought an air conditioner and it’s fucking freezing in my house. Worth every penny.

  19. I wear those trainers that have the little lights flash when you walk, makes me feel pretty cool,

  20. I live in the roof.

Air conditioning. It’s that, or accept being oven baked with a side of chips.

  21. I’m fine – I threw out all the food we’re not eating and moved into the fridge – even a gentle hum to help sleep

  22. I don’t, whatever I do my room will reach 30 plus degrees in the daytime and won’t fall before 25 overnight.

half expect to collapse and have a stroke/heart attack

  23. My fiancé is 40 weeks pregnant and not having a good time, so I caved and bought us a portable aircon unit. Life saver

  24. Windows and curtains opened and closed as needed.

    Ceiling fan in main bedroom.

Portable AC downstairs to bring the temp down and then a fan for the evening when it’s a bit cooler.

Alternative sleeping arrangements for the next few days 😄

    I hate this weather.

  25. The neighbours filled their paddling pool yesterday after I warned them about the hose pipe ban that started at midnight. I am hoping that my good deed will be repaid and they will allow me to wallow like a hippo while the kids are at school. If not, all the windows are covered and closed, I have fans all over the flat, several cold packs in the freezer, and lots of electrolyte replacement tablets to dissolve in very cold water.

Also, ice pops. One under each boob works a treat.

  26. Wet towels all the way.

My aged father still insists on gardening and going for walks on days like this – he puts a wet towel around his neck and sometimes wets his hat. It seems to work quite well.

I gave my kids wet towels in the car yesterday and one of them fell asleep so it must be a good sign.

  27. by having so many ice cubes in my drink, it’s more ice than liquid

  28. My best mates parents have a pool.

Oh boy am I going there today.

  29. If you have a fan, at night open up two windows in separate rooms. Have the fan about a meter back from one of the windows blowing the hot air out and it will pull the cooler air in from outside through the other. I find it works best between 4am-7am when the outside temp is the coolest. Then shut everything up during the day.

  30. I’m going to sweat, stink and burn and hate every moment of it.
