Prince Harry has reportedly had reservations about quitting the royal family and starting a new life in the U.S. for many years now.

And although he reportedly has no plans to return to the U.K. permanently until his private security demands are met (he could be waiting a very long time!) he is allegedly still unhappy with his current living situation, as he is said to be struggling with life without a job and his closest friends and family around him. According to reports, a royal expert has claimed that the Duke of Sussex has deep “regrets” about living in Montecito, California due to finding it completely isolating – a stark contrast to his life in the U.K., where he had a job and longtime friends, not to mention his family and the private security that comes with being a working royal!

“Harry is in exile,” royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams told Fox News Digital earlier this month. “Undoubtedly, he has some regrets. He appears to have lost touch with many of his friends and, of course, there is the royal rift.”

Fitzwilliams went on to say that the father-of-two’s life in the U.S. is very different from that of wife Meghan Markle, who is finally seeing success professionally – whereas Harry’s recent Netflix Polo series reportedly flopped.

“In recent months, it has been Meghan who has fronted things. Her launch of lifestyle products has been backed by Netflix,” he noted.

“Harry has picked up a couple of awards, but the fact that 76,000 signed a petition when he received the Pat Tillman Award was a warning that many Americans view the couple with disdain,” Fitzwilliams added, referencing the backlash Prince Harry faced when he received the Pat Tillman Award for Service at the 2024 ESPY Awards.

This sentiment echoes what royal expert Hilary Fordwich also told the pub about Prince Harry’s professional success in the U.S. – or lack thereof – as she said: “Prince Harry’s life is characterized by frustration, lack of clear achievement and his persistent struggle to carve out anything either lucrative or fulfilling.”

Royal historian Marlene Koenig also chimed in about Prince Harry’s lack of professional traction in contrast to his wife while speaking to Us Weekly, telling the mag: “I’m not sure if Harry has regrets about leaving as he is determined to build a new life in the U.S. But he hasn’t been entirely successful, especially in terms of earning money for the family. That seems to have fallen on Meghan.”

“He was always expected to play a supportive but not a supporting role,” Koenig continued about Prince Harry’s hopes for himself, adding: “He may be comfortable in his California home with his wife and two adorable children, but what he hasn’t found yet is the comfort of success outside [of] home.”

Fitzwilliams also chimed in: “Any exile is bound to have regrets, not seeing his friends and, as he has admitted, the breach with his family.” He added: “Obviously his life now couldn’t be more different than his existence as a royal.”
