Luxembourg recorded the third-highest population growth rate in the EU last year, according to data published by the EU’s statistics agency on Friday.
The Grand Duchy added a total of 14.7 new residents per 1,000 inhabitants, behind just Malta (19) and Ireland (16.3), Eurostat reported on Friday.
The EU’s statistics agency said eight EU countries registered relative population declines, led by Latvia (-9.9 fewer residents per 1,000 inhabitants) and Hungary (-4.7).
Stripping out natural population change – births and deaths – Luxembourg had the fifth highest population growth rate among EU member states in 2024.
Net migration pushed up the Grand Duchy’s population by 11.7%, behind Malta (18.7%), Portugal (13.4%), Ireland (12.8%) and Spain (11.8%).
By sheer total numbers – counting net migration and births minus deaths – Luxembourg experienced the fifth lowest population increase. There were 7,935 more inhabitants in the Grand Duchy last year, ahead of Hungary (4,086), Slovakia (2,399), Estonia (1,374) and Latvia (-4,610).
Malta, slightly smaller but with a similar population size as Luxembourg, added a third more people.
Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Poland were the five largest EU countries in terms of total population in 2024, according to Eurostat. The smallest five were Latvia, Estonia, Cyprus, Luxembourg and Malta.
