During the second ministerial meeting held in Croatia, the ministers of Southeast European countries expressed their support for Ukraine in its pursuit of NATO membership. In a joint communiqué, the participants emphasized that Ukraine has the right to independently choose its security mechanisms and determine its future without external interference.

“NATO membership remains the most economically effective security option for Ukraine… We fully support Ukraine’s right to choose its own security mechanisms and decide its future free from external interference.”

The ministers stressed that the issue of NATO enlargement is decided exclusively by the alliance member countries, and no country, including Russia, has a veto over this process. They also expressed their readiness to support Ukraine’s invitation to NATO when the allies are prepared for this step.

Furthermore, the summit participants reaffirmed their determination to assist Ukraine and other countries in the region in meeting the criteria for joining the European Union. They expressed support for candidates and potential candidates on the path to EU membership.

“The future membership of Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova, and our partners from the Western Balkans in the EU is vital for the long-term stability, security, and prosperity of our region and Europe as a whole.”

The ministers also called on the international community to maintain and strengthen sanctions against Russia, especially in the banking and energy sectors. The statement emphasizes that Russia must be held accountable for its aggression and pay full compensation for the damages caused.
