Durham Miners’ Gala is one of the largest gatherings of trade unionists in Europe.
It dates back to 1871 and its roots lie in a strong local heritage and cultural memory.
Durham Miners’ Gala combines colourful banners, live music and powerful speeches to highlight the heritage of miners in County Durham and around Britain, who fought tirelessly for the freedoms that we take for granted today (such as: safer working conditions, a proper work-life balance, safe housing, the right to vote and get an education).
The political atmosphere at the Gala has socialist/communist, pro-Palestine and general anti-capitalist elements.
Regardless of political differences, however, the event successfully evokes a sense of cultural pride and togetherness. Above all, prioritising the rights and freedoms of the common people is something I think most of us can agree on, and this Gala is an opportunity to be vocal about that.
