Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian was reportedly the target of an Israeli assassination attempt during a strike on the Islamic Republic’s judiciary on June 15, when the two countries were engaged in a deadly war, according to a report.

Israel reportedly tried to assassinate Pezeshkian, Iran’s parliament speaker and the head of the judiciary during a strike on a meeting of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council in Tehran, according to a report by the Islamic Guard Revolutionary Corps (IRGC)-affiliated Fars News agency.

Pezeshkian was lightly wounded in the leg when Israel used several missiles or bombs to block the exits to the building where the meeting was being held. However, all three officials managed to escape through an emergency hatch, according to the report.

Pezeshkian and other officials – who were in the lower levels of the building – were injured while escaping the building, and an investigation was underway to discover whether a mole had given information on the meeting to Israel. The assassination attempt was reportedly designed on the basis of the strike that killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut last year.

‘They Tried, But Failed’

Last week, Pezeshkian told American political commentator Tucker Carlson that Israel had attempted to assassinate him, but failed. “They did try, yes. They acted accordingly, but they failed,” he said in a 28-minute interview with Carlson.

“I was in a meeting… but thanks to the intelligence by the spies that they had, they tried to bombard the area in which we were holding that meeting,” he further elaborated, without specifying the date of the alleged assassination attempt nor whether it had taken place during last month’s conflict.

Israel launched a sweeping assault on Iran’s nuclear and military assets last month, and killed top military leaders and senior nuclear scientists in Tehran – saying it was necessary to stop the Islamic Republic from creating a nuclear weapon.

On June 22, the United States joined the assault, striking key Iranian nuclear facilities at Natanz, Fordo, and Isfahan with “bunker-busting” bombs and Tomahawk missiles. There were reports that Israel planned to kill Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, but US President Donald Trump took credit for preventing American and Israeli forces from doing so.
