NOMAGAS, North Macedonia’s state-owned natural gas transmission system operator (TSO), has begun construction of the gas interconnector that will link the country with Greece, as well as with the broader regional and European gas networks.

It is stretching 66.7 kilometres from Gevgelija to Negotino, and it will initially have a capacity of 1.5 billion cubic metres per year.

“This is a capital and strategic project for North Macedonia,” said the company’s Director, Muhamet Elmazi. It ensures security, efficiency and supply stability, while also positioning us as an energy hub in the region.”

The pipeline is also ready to address future demands for green, clean and sustainable energy, in line with the highest European standards.

Preparations for the strategic project began in 2016. Valued at 83 million euros, it is supported by the European Union, the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), and is being implemented by the Macedonian company Rapid Build.

The interconnector forms part of a broader regional effort to connect with Serbia, Kosovo and beyond, completing the regional gas network and reinforcing North Macedonia’s role as a key energy hub in the Balkans.
