The veterans are going and then in a few more decades those who were raised by the veterans will be gone. At that point I’d say the link is severed – the second world war ‘officially’ becomes history.
I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or not – history repeating itself and all that – but I hope the jingoistic obsession with the war that seems to be mainly held by the generation that grew up in the aftermath almost imagining *they* were the ones to win it will hopefully be a thing of the past.
