The most vicious massacre in the world was occurring in China while the western world wrung its hands over the paltry conflict that was the Spanish Civil War.
The Nanjing massacre resulted in more deaths than the total losses of both sides of the Spanish Civil War, yet the west still puts the Sino Japanese war in the margins.
Edit: I’m not trying to downplay war, but after 4 years SCW had about 130k-250k casualties with reports varying widely. In 4 months, about 200k were killed in Nanjing alone.
Spain was a war of ideas and politics. Sino-japanese conflict, much like the Ukraine war, was built on racial and cultural aggression and domination. A cultural belief in the right to rule over lesser peoples.

Unbelievable to imagine the scale of atrocities committed during the Sino Japanese war. It arguably makes the holocaust comparable to this although they S-J war and atrocities get a tenth of the coverage.
