Auschwitz I (main camp):
The gas chamber and crematorium there (Crematorium I) were dismantled by the Nazis in 1944 when they stopped mass killings at that site.
After the war, Polish authorities partially reconstructed the gas chamber and crematorium in the late 1940s, using original materials where possible, to serve as a memorial.
This reconstruction included rebuilding some of the walls, roof, and chimneys. It is not exactly as it was during operation, but it’s based closely on surviving plans and evidence.
Auschwitz II-Birkenau (the larger extermination camp):
The four main gas chambers and crematoria (Crematoria II–V) were destroyed by the Nazis in early 1945 as they tried to cover up evidence.
At Birkenau, only ruins of the gas chambers remain. These have not been reconstructed, and they are preserved in their ruined state as historical evidence.
Summary:
Auschwitz I gas chamber: Partially reconstructed.
