July the 16th, 2025 – Croatia now has a brand new 2 euro coin to commemorate something extremely important in Croatian history.

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, the Croatian National Bank (HNB) has now put a brand new 2 euro commemorative coin into circulation to mark the “1100th Anniversary of the Croatian Kingdom and the Coronation of King Tomislav”.

The new coin entered into circulation in Croatia on Monday, July the 14th, and has been issued in a quantity of 400,000 pieces. Of that entire sum, 382,400 pieces will be available to the public for exchange.

Croatia has placed motifs on the new commemorative 2 euro coin to represent King Tomislav, who was crowned King of Croatia way back in 925. That year is considered the beginning of the very important 1100th anniversary of the Croatian Kingdom, with an exceptionally rich historical, cultural and political significance for the nation. The depiction of the monument to King Tomislav was also one of the main motifs on the reverse of the 1,000-kuna banknote when the former currency was in circulation prior to Eurozone accession in 2023.

The author of the artistic design of the new coin is sculptor Nikola Vudrag, and the coin was minted at the Croatian Mint (HKN). In addition to their numismatic significance, commemorative coins such as these also have the status of circulation coins and, as a rule, no fee can be charged for their exchange. As such, in Croatia, the new 2 euro commemorative coin is available at the exchange price of just 2 euros, the central bank noted.

The exchange of commemorative coins for the general public is scheduled to begin on September the 8th. Those interested can obtain this 2 euro coin by registering with the CNB’s Commemorative Coin Pre-order System until July the 31st, or until the scheduled quantities for exchange expire.

Members of the public will be able to express interest in exchanging up to five copies of the new commemorative coin or until the scheduled quantities for exchange of new commemorative coins expire.

From September the 8th onwards, individuals will be able to exchange their coins in person at the CNB cash desk at Jurišićeva 17 in central Zagreb, based on a confirmed pre-registration, from Monday to Friday from 08:30 until 15:00, free of charge.

They will also be able to do this via postal services by delivery to an address in Croatia, with a fee for the postal service, which is paid based on the CNB’s pro forma invoice. It will also be possible through Fina branches, with a fee according to the agency’s price list.

Those interested in a commemorative coin packaged in a special “blister pack” and those who need additional information they should visit the CNB’s official website.
