  5. While he school was obviously being stupid I really cannot bring myself to feel any sympathy for the parents (mostly dad it seems?) just pushing and pushing us to stay outraged.

  14. I have pasted a previous comment I made a few months ago regarding British identity as I have been following this story fairly closely.

    I’m a Canadian of South Asian descent. My parents are from a former British colony.

    I am proud to be Canadian and I hope all British people (homegrown or otherwise) are proud to be British. There is a very dangerous narrative being pushed that colonialism was only a Western phenomenon and that the wealth and history of Western countries is entirely centred around colonialism.

    Imperialism has always been a worldwide phenomenon amongst powerful countries and empires, not just western ones. Look up imperialism in the Arab world or amongst the Ottoman empire for anyone who doubts that it has only ever occurred in the west. The difference between the west and the rest is that that the west is the only place where countries actually acknowledge the dark times in their past while the rest of the world (Middle East, China, India etc) pushes far-right ultra nationalism even amongst its diaspora in the west.

  17. Putting your kid in the newspaper seems like a mistake. Dunno what on Earth happened though. If this is true then it’s honestly bizarre. Unless it was meant to be something explicitly intended for minorities that wasn’t explained in the letter but that they knew full well and tried to be funny about…?

  23. I’m from Rugby and my partner works at the school that’s been accused of doing this.

    He’s been told by teachers and shown the letter that was sent to all pupils that flags are not allowed. They also have said that the girl in question was supposed to get the letter signed. She never signed it and handed the letter back.

    The mother was first called by the school whilst she was in class at the time. The dad then rang the school back and told them to SEND HIS DAUGHTER TO RECEPTION so he can pick her up.

    The school has since gone into lockdown and has had death threats, threats of burning the place down and right wing media knocking on the gates to then be turned away by teachers and caretakers. Caretakers have to literally open the gates manually to let teachers and other staff in and out of the school.

    This is so important that everyone sees this and proves that the father has taken this way out of proportion and I genuinely feel sorry for the staff there. A silly mistake to have made but my god they’re terrified.

    That father knew what he was doing sending her off with that homework in a Union Jack dress. Knowing the school would have a problem with the bigotry on a day about all their pupils cultures.

    I can’t imagine that she was the only British student at the school, and so if showing off British values and dress were the issue there would be many more cases. But there’s just this one.

    The Union Jack wasn’t the problem, neither was being proud of her heritage of being English. What was a problem was the bare ones trash ‘homework’

  29. Classic British media. Outrage gets clicks and such. Seems like the school messed up and acknowledged it, but now the media is involved and milking it dry. Can’t seem to get away from this story lately.

    I must say, though, the Dad strikes me as someone with a bit of an ulterior motive behind his words, and I wonder if he’s been particularly insistent about involving the media. It always makes me feel a little bit wary when somebody says something like “People have had enough of being told what they can and can’t do” in such a vague, broadly interpretable manner. It’s the kind of sentiment that tends to incite people who are looking for reasons to feel oppressed and want an excuse to lash out at regular people who they believe (often falsely) are part of the reason(s) why they are struggling.

    This is, of course, broad speculation on my part, but it’s still something worth noting at the moment, especially with consideration towards some of the more dangerous nationalist rhetoric you hear today. That’s not to say you can’t/shouldn’t be proud of your country, but typically, the main sources of common struggles in Britain today come from issues higher up the political chain. Always worth keeping that in mind, as there’s no need to stir up division with your neighbours who are just trying to survive.

  30. If the school is celebrating other cultures, then it’s a bit of a fuck you to labour the “my British” angle. Not saying that’s what the girl intended. But there’s a lot of British superiority and anti immigrant sentiment in the UK, and I can see how that’s see as anti-other cultures.
