HENRIETTA, N.Y. – A viewer got a letter from Social Security saying she is entitled to a pension but no one can say where the money is.

The pension is from a former high-end shoe store called Altier’s. People who got this letter are told to contact the administrator at an address on Mushroom Boulevard in Henrietta. The address is the old Altier’s warehouse. It’s an electric company now.

Berkeley Brean, News10NBC: “So it’s a real mystery, where this money is.”

Deb North, can’t locate old Altier Shoes pension money: “It is.”

“I’m not sure where it is. I hope we can find it,” North said.

Deb North was a store manager for Altier’s in Canandaigua back in the 1980s. The company went bankrupt in the mid-90s and was bought by a shoe company in North Carolina.

30 years later, North trains and races a carriage horse. And now she gets this letter from Social Security saying she’s entitled to a pension of $118.

“I guess it’s been so long since I was employed by Altier and Sons shoes that I had kind of forgotten that there was a little bit of a retirement plan for those of us who were salaried employees,” North said.

Berkeley Brean: “I don’t think you can find the money.”

Deb North: “I can’t.”

There is no record of the Altier plan administrator and every state and federal agency Deb and I turned to find the money, didn’t have it.

Berkeley Brean: “Where do you think that money is?”

Deb North: “Well I hope that it is set aside. I believe it is required by law that these funds be set aside and held for companies that have these types of programs.”

When people file for Social Security, the IRS checks to see if there’s other money they’re owed. If there is, people get this letter. The instruction to get the money is to contact the plan administrator. If you’re experiencing this problem, email us at news1@whec.com.
