The University, the Cathedral and many parts were beautiful but oh my… the garbage and dog or otherwise waste on the streets. There are bins everywhere.

  5. Manky beyond belief. The biggest shock to my system was flying into Glasgow after 2 weeks in Barra, it felt like going from Hobbiton to the steaming bowels of Isengard in under an hour.

  7. Yeah, I actually live in Scotland and swerve Glasgow for this reason. The litter alone is fucking disgraceful, and it’s a crying shame because it’s an otherwise beautiful city with so much going for it. 

    England has enough of its problems, enough that I chose to leave it to move up here, but when I did live there I never saw half as much litter as I do here in Scotland. No idea why Scottish people hate their country so much. 

    Does anybody know why the litter problem is so much worse up here? I refuse to believe that Scotland simply has more scratters than England. 

  8. Someone summed it up to me really well a few years ago.

    Glasgow is playing the game of Scotland on Hard Mode. A challenge, yes, but that can also come with way more fun.

    Edit – also worth pointing out that plenty parts of Edinburgh outwith the city centre are also rife with rubbish. As a collective, we seem to care too little here.

  18. As someone who was born in Edinburgh, spent most of my childhood on Skye and now lives in Glasgow it is nowhere near as bad as you’re making it out to be.

    Is glasgow dirtier than most other places in Scotland? Yes, of course, it’s a big city with more people than anywhere else in Scotland, more people means more rubbish and dirt. Anyone who travels knows almost every big city is plagued with the same problems outside of the touristy areas, which btw is mostly why Edinburgh appears to be far cleaner than Glasgow since Edinburgh is nothing more than a tourist theme park these days but even then Edinburgh has its rougher areas just like Glasgow. Just to avoid any confusion, I’m under no illusions that Glasgow is some sort of paradise on earth, absolutely not. Glasgow of course has its problems but comparing massive Glasgow to the idyllic Scottish countryside with its tiny wee villages is not a fair comparison at all. Its like comparing London to a village in the cotswold and being upset that London is dirtier.

    One thing I love about Glasgow is the fact it doesn’t try to be anything but itself if that makes sense? Glasgow is so unapologetically gleswegian and it doesn’t try to pretend it’s any better or worse than it is.

This will obviously bring up a lot of tribal reaction (obviously people are very defensive of their home) but having grown up in Glasgow and left it a few years ago, I’m really appalled when I come back every so often to see how filthy it is. The city centre is a complete mess and it just wasn’t anywhere near that back 10 years ago.

  23. You’re not alone. My Finnish wife was fucking appalled when she first visited Glasgow, even compared to Aberdeen it’s astoundingly manky.

    Weegies love to give it big defending Glasgow but won’t bat an eye at dumping their shite on the ground of their ‘beloved’ city, sometimes literally.
