From my journalism era I knew people at WNYC and WXPN and NPR; those sources had some of the best news and music programs. This is truly heartbreaking on a personal level.

Speaker Johnson said this type of stuff wouldn’t happen under his leadership. He promised no more rushed votes without giving time to read bills and a return to the committee process of legislation. Yet, here we are with no one to hold him to his word.
There was a time immediately after Helene hit Western North Carolina where the only way to get any information about what was going on was on our local NPR station. We had no Internet, no cell service, no power. WNCW was running on generators to be able to get info out to the community. Fuck Tillis and Budd for voting for this bill.

Honestly, it blows my mind that U.S. Senators aren’t required to be physically present in the chamber during proceedings. Like, how is that not a basic part of the job???
They’re paid six figures with taxpayer money, and yet they can just come and go during debates, votes, and hearings. No attendance requirement. No obligation to sit there, listen, or even pretend to engage unless it’s time to vote. Half the time, the chamber looks like a ghost town on C-SPAN.
They get away with it because Senate rules allow for a ton of flexibility. Staffers keep them updated, and a lot of deals and decisions happen behind closed doors or in committees. The floor speeches? Mostly for show or the Congressional Record.
But maybe if they were actually required to be present for every session, just like most Americans have to show up for their jobs, we’d see faster decisions, more accountability, and less performative nonsense.
Being a Senator shouldn’t mean you get to ghost the room where democracy happens.

Removing funding for PBS to save money is like deleting a text file on your hard drive to free up space.
I’m in my mid 40s and its soul crushing to know that the rest of my time here on Earth will be spent trying to fix what these cruel monsters posing as “fiscally responsible” Christians have broken, if we ever get to kick them out of power even.
