Film show: Your must-see summer movies • FRANCE 24 English

[Music] [Applause] Where the buffalo is that praying? [Music] I would question myself in the same situation and consider the consequences. Sound effects. M. You back off. Hello and welcome to our weekly film show on Arts 24 with our film critic Emma Jones. Hello Emma. Hello. Welcome to the show. Now we’re starting with a COVID western with some big names. Wack Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, Emma Stone, and Austin Butler. Edington by Ari had its world premiere in competition at the Can Film Festival, but it was not a winner, was it Emma? It wasn’t. And perhaps that alas sums the film up really. So Ari Aster, he’s the American director whose first two feature films were really very acclaimed horrors. That’s Hereditary and Midsoma. But just like his last less critically loved film, Bo is afraid, also starring Wacken Phoenix, edit Edington is really a psychological unraveling and perhaps in this case it’s of an entire country. So, COVID 19 and the Black Lives Matter movement, uh, also another landmark of 2020, of course, are explored through the microcosm of Edington, a fictitious New Mexico town. Wack Phoenix plays the police chief Joe, who has asthma and does not like the new maskearing rules, and that puts him in a standoff with Pedra Pascal, the mayor, Ted. Now, Emma Stone plays Joe’s fragile wife, and she isn’t helped by the presence of her mother, a conspiracy theorist. Okay. Well, let’s take a look at Edington and hear from the actor Whack in Phoenix. It allowed me to feel um connected to people that I might not have felt a connection to prior to that. We were all terrified and we didn’t fully understand it. Um, and instead of kind of like reaching out to each other in those moments, we kind of like became antagonistic towards each other, um, and like self-righteous and certain of our position. How do we get here? And even worse, is it worth it? at the cost of being at war with your neighbors. That’s why I’m running for mayor. Mayor addington. Thank you super duper very much. I used to think that you were some big deal. So some of those scenes are very reminiscent of the COVID times that COVID test in the nose. So why doesn’t the film work, do you think? I just find it too chaotic. Even if that really does reflect the time as well. There are just too many characters and storylines in this film. I feel we don’t really even have time to talk about some of the younger characters in the movie, such as Austin Butler playing a cultlike leader who’s capitalizing on all that online fear. I feel that the lead characters, particularly Emma Stone, they don’t have a chance to shine even though the movie is quite a bloated around two and a half hours long. So Edington ultimately descends into a modern western with violence. Um there is still humor in the film though and I do feel Arasa he deserves credit for daring to examine such recent history and he said that to him COVID 19 was the tipping point at which time the USA became so divided triggered by the isolation people suffered. So really interesting premise for a film. Maybe it’s just too soon um for a pandemic movie like that. And moving on then to a film which is flying high at the box office, taking more than $120 million in its opening weekend. The James Gun reboot of Superman stars David Corinwat as the latest incarnation of The Man of Steel. Emma, the film cost an estimated $300 million. Was it worth it? Um, I’d say very good news for the DC comic universe, which is still lagging behind Marvel. And I’ve got to say, I really like this Superman. So gone is the moodiness of the Zack Snder era with Henry Cavl as a superhero. Corin Sweat Superman. You He’s full of amiability, decency, and trust. Oh, we like that. We do. Let’s take a look at the film. Crypto home. He looked at me. 14 fractured bone. damage to bladder, kidney, large intestine, lungs. That dog is enough to make me go and watch it. Cryptow he’s called. And he’s based in the director James um gun’s real life rescue dog, isn’t he? Crypto steals the entire show. And Superdog is the film I’m really holding space for, I have to say. But, you know, this is really interesting because James Garn, he’s now in control of the DC comic universe and really true to his roots directing the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. Um, he puts a lot of humor into this movie that really lightens the punch he’s packing with his message. Because in this film, Superman is locked away by malcontent billionaire Lex Luthther, played by Nicholas Halt, who’s jealous and afraid because Superman is an alien. Um the director says this version of Superman offers something quite new. I mean it’s different in almost every way. I mean um I think that we get to know um Superman a little more intimately. We get to, you know, really discover what are his flaws, what are his opinions, what are his ideals. I think we get a very intimate look at his relationship with Lois. I also think that it’s a bigger movie than it’s ever been told with Superman before. And you said the villain Luther is fearful of the immigrant alien Superman. And that feels very timely, doesn’t it? It does. And there’s another subplot in the film that’s set in the fictitious countries of Bavia and Jarpur. So the mightier Bavia wants to invade and massacre the inhabitants of Jarpur. So speculation has been rampant online that Gun has actually made a film about the conflict in Israel and Gaza. um or given the confused geography of the film that the desert of Jarpur set in Eastern Europe um is perhaps it’s Russian Ukraine he’s talking about now I think that gun has simply making a point about bullies in the world really Lex Luthther is certainly one Superman though has such a soft heart under that man of steel exterior that he can’t even allow that dog krypto to be kidnapped by length Luther and I think that it’s that sweetness of Corin sweat as this character that makes him, you know, almost as good a watch as the wonderful Christopher Reeve. Okay, we’re looking forward to that. And it is teased in the last minutes of the film. Supergirl is the next movie in the franchise to be released. Now, on to another reboot, this time of the Smurfs. Created half a century ago by the Belgian comic book artist and writer Po. Directed by Pussing Boots and Shreks Chris Miller, this new Smurfs adventure sees Smurfett, previously voiced by Katy Perry, now played by an even bigger pop star Rihanna, who’s also the producer on the film. Let’s take a look at what to expect. What the smurf? No, I think I just smurfed my pants. Code blue. We got to rescue Papa. Let me guess. Papa Smurf’s in trouble. We are storming Rosamel’s castle and we take no prisoners. Except for Papa. We’ll make sure and grab him. So, Emma, did you smurf it? I really did like it a lot. And I’m sure I’m not their target demographic. So, Chris Miller really showing his experience here as a director with this film. and from its first Bollywood inspired dance scene. It’s an explosion of color, not just blue. And uh there’s a plot which is a real nod to its history as their traditional opponents, the evil wizard Gargaml and his brother Raziml kidnap Papa Smurf, who’s voiced again by John Goodman. Now, he actually voiced Papa Smurf in the 1980s TV series. British actor James Cordon has a main role of no name Smurf who’s worried that he’s got no skills at all. And Rihanna, she does really well as Smurfett, I’ve got to say, as well as providing some original new music for the film. And Rihanna actually was at the world premiere in Brussels. And it turns out she was a childhood fan. I never thought it would be possible like playing Smurfett. We all as little girls like if you were a fan of the Smurfs, you always wanted to be Smurf fan. So having the opportunity to play her and bring my own thing to the character, a big deal, a lot of pressure and super super exciting. Things to look out for in this movie. There’s a segment set in Paris. There’s a nod to the Smurfs Belgian roots I feel with Smurfett’s obsession with potato fries. And also there’s a short delightful history of animation definitely aimed at the grown-ups as the Smurfs pass through various magic portals. It’s really joyous movie. Okay. We like joyous movies. This is our final show and before the summer break, but this um the film releases of course they don’t stop and there’s still some big movies to look out for in July and August. Tell us more. Yes indeed. Um Substitution Brer Back. This is the latest film by Michael and Danny Philippu. Now, their previous movie, Talk to Me, was a popular Gen Z horror. Uh, these Australian twins have returned with Bring Her Back, starring Sally Hawkins in a role that mean you will never again be able to see her as the delightful Mrs. Brown in Paddington. She plays a creepy foster mother to a visually impaired orphan and her brother Hawkins is outstanding, although I have to say the plot doesn’t quite live up to her performance. And Luke Besson returns to French cinemas with his version of Dracula and played by Calb Landry Jones. He also starred in Besson Besson’s Dogman. Yeah, Besson stated that he’s made this film really as his priority to work with Landry Jones again, not because necessarily of love of the legend. So filmed in both France and Lapland, Beth Besson sets it in 19th century Paris instead of London as a Gothic love story. Okay. And finally, um, it’s Pedro Pascal Summer. It is. He’s not only in Edington and another movie materialist at the moment, but also he’s in the Fantastic 4 First Steps as well. So, Mr. Fantastic co-stars with Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and also Eb um Ibon Moss Buckarak. And this is set in a 1960s retro futuristic world and sees the family forced to defend Earth from a space girl god called Galacticus and his enigmatic herald, the Silver Surfer. Now, that has been making headlines because that role is now played by a woman, Julia Garner. This is also director Matt Shackman’s first feature film. Okay. Well, Emma, that brings us to the end of the show. Thank you for your roundup and what films to look out for the summer. We’re going to leave you then with The Fantastic Four. Thanks for joining us for our final film show before the summer break. We’ll see you soon for more movie releases. There’s more news coming up on France 24 after this. Famous around the world. Please welcome the Fantastic 4, Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch. I love you, Johnny. And the thing. Hey, what time is it? Say the thing. That’s not really something I say. It’s clever and

  1. To this American, Eddington looks awesome, and I truly hope this Superman movie takes hold- did you know he was originally targeted to the children of immigrants!?
