Members of a navy underwater demolition unit on Thursday carried out a controlled explosion to destroy a World War II-era mine that was discovered in a sea region off the southwest Greece, and specifically at the Aghios Ilias site in Elia prefecture.

The mine had been discovered last February between Aghios Ilias and the settlement of Douneika.

According to ilialive.gr, the underwater demolition was aided by the Katakolos harbor corps in arriving at the spot and conducting the bomb disposal operation.

Discovery of wartime ordnance, on both land and sea, isn’t an unusual occurrence in Greece, with military and police bomb disposal units used to defuse and destroy the objects.
