In a dramatic fusion of tradition and style, forty Roman Catholic bishops took part in Dolce & Gabbana’s latest fashion show on a historic bridge in the heart of Rome. Wearing ceremonial robes, the Vatican bishops walked alongside professional models, transforming the Ponte Sant’Angelo into a striking open-air runway. The event stood out not just for its daring concept, but for its unexpected setting, with the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica glowing in the background.
The bridge, which dates back to the second century, served as a symbolic backdrop. Originally built by Emperor Hadrian, it once led to his mausoleum and has played various roles throughout history—as a fortress, papal residence, and cinematic icon. For one night, it became a glowing stage, lit by dramatic spotlights and filled with performers from Rome’s famous Cinecittà Studios dressed in religious attire.
Dolce Gabbana invites Catholic Bishops, blending sacred imagery with modern glamour
Designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana have often turned to religious influence in their designs, and this show was no exception. Their latest collection drew heavily from Catholic traditions, but reimagined them with a high-fashion lens. Some garments echoed the look of classic clerical wear—simple tunics made of crisp white linen—while others were far more elaborate, including suits adorned with jeweled crosses and floor-length capes sparkling with crystal details.
This artistic direction is familiar territory for the design duo, who were both raised in Catholic households. Over the years, they’ve gained attention for embracing themes of faith, often walking the line between reverence and bold expression. While some observers might see their church-themed work as controversial, supporters argue that the designers approach these elements with genuine respect.
The opening piece featured a cape inspired by the 1903 papal conclave, immediately setting the tone for the show’s religious motif. While the theme stirred conversation, many attendees focused more on the craftsmanship—luxurious fabrics, intricate embroidery, and flawless tailoring—all executed with theatrical flair.
Audience applauds creativity behind controversial show
This is not the first time Dolce & Gabbana have turned to sacred imagery. In 2022, they staged a similar event in Sicily, where models appeared as grieving widows and young novices. These performances often spark debate, but supporters say the designers remain sincere in their use of religious themes.
Don Alberto Rocca, a priest close to the Dolce family and a frequent guest at their events, explained that while the designs may push boundaries, they don’t cross into mockery.
The evening ended with fireworks over the Tiber River, closing the show with a cinematic flourish. As guests applauded, Domenico Dolce joked, “I want to be Pope very soon.” In the world of fashion, that title might already be his.
