If this passes, Ireland will become the 35 country that officially recognises the Armenian Genocide, carried out by Ottoman Turkey between 1915 and 1923 — a genocide Turkey denies to this day.
countries that have so far recognised the Armenian Genocide include:
Uruguay (1965) — first country to do so
Cyprus (1975) — first EU country to do so
Armenia (1988)
Argentina (1993)
Russia, Greece (1995) — first European countries to do so
Canada (1996)
Lebanon, France (1997)
Belgium (1998)
Italy, Vatican City (2000)
Switzerland (2003)
Netherlands, Slovakia (2004)
Venezuela (2005)
Poland (2006)
Lithuania (2006)
Chile (2007)
Sweden (2010)
Scotland (2011) — first UK constituent country to do so
Bolivia (2014)
Austria, Luxembourg, Brazil, Bulgaria, Paraguay, Syria (2015)
Germany (2016)
Czech Republic (2018)
Portugal, Latvia (2019)
United States (2021) — recognised by Joe Biden
Mexico (2023)
Here’s how this goes: if the bill passes, and is signed, well okay. Then Turkey gets into a situation where they are needed for a vote in the UN, and they squeeze Ireland for this. They say “no vote until Ireland rescinds the idea that there was genocide in Armenia caused by Turks” and they hold firm. *The Turks NEVER back down from this*. So, Ireland has to capitulate so that Turkey will vote with the rest of the bloc. They have done this before, they will do it again. Claps to Ireland for the correct historical view, but will eventually lead to capitulation when Turkey is needed for something.
