Going to guess the “PR language” around the reason is them basically trying to avoid saying “your daughter’s are wearing skirts so short they barely qualify as a belt, and because of that we’re banning all skirts and are not letting this shit fly anymore”.
The stuff about feeling uncomfortable and not suited to wearing all day is ridiculous. They’re fucking trousers
Women wearing skirts is haram
How about we let kids wear what they find comfortable in they are supposed to be locked in for 7 hours a day in a hot building
Anyone who has ever workedin a school knows that in summer “some” of the girls will wear their skirt WAY too short
and if their parents are contacted and start to check before they leave the house then they will just roll the waist up so it become short anyway
They just do
and there is a major problem with male teacher commenting on it as it can be seen as pervy
Funny really – in that school the girls always wore trouser even though skirts were allowed
it was only in hot sunny weather than they changed to short skirts
Trousers are the way forward:
The article discusses lack of comfort and lack of choice – both things that have never affected male students who historically have to wear trousers and don’t get a choice between trousers or a skirt.
Putting aside the fact skirts being shorter than a girls blazer is a real issue because it’s a distraction, not necessarily to boys or teachers, it just undermines the whole authority of the school rules because male teachers feel unable to address it.
Dress codes exist for a reason, some non-female related examples:
Boys wearing football tops to school – rather than focus on the lesson they start debating their favourite teams, get into arguments over recent matches, etc.
Both a positive and a negative – students wearing shirts with slogans that might be offensive or have themes which lead to bullying. Even things that support groups – a rainbow shirt – I support the LGBT community but that means that kid is now a target amongst his peers.
Wealth divides influencing their relationship – i.e so and so only wears stuff from Primark. Etc.
Children are emotional creatures that lack the same range as adults, for them school is their entire universe – they don’t realise it’s important until they actually go through experiences that require it.
The length of the skirts the girls wear at a school near me is ridiculous! Hand on heart most of them can’t walk 10 paces without showing arse cheek and underwear and having to pull them down. I don’t know how parents can let them leave the house in the morning with what is essentially a belt not a skirt on. I work in a garage and we shut the doors at in and home time because it’s so uncomfortable.
Honestly, this is a good thing, but schools are going about it in the wrong way.
Rather than banning specific items, they should rewrite their entire uniform policies with a focus on making them more practical, durable, and affordable. And then set their uniforms to sweat suits, track suits, T-shirts, sports shorts, and trainers.
These are all clothes that are designed to be comfortable (children learn best when they’re comfortable), to stand up to rugged use and repeated washing, can be sourced affordably, are difficult to sexualise, are fairly gender neutral so harder to politicise from either side of the argument, they allow more freedom of movement (so ideally suited to the age range that tends to be more active), and come in a wide range of colours to fit within a school’s colour branding.
This would remove all the problem points about uniforms, while retaining all the benefits of them.
I wasn’t allowed to wear trousers in school a couple of decades ago despite coming home crying several times because boys kept pulling my skirt up. My mom managed to argue them into letting me wear an ankle-length skirt eventually, and I got to wear trousers a few years later, and I was a lot happier. I generally just prefer trousers now anyway.
