We like to think that video games are for everyone regardless of their background or identity, but most games do tend to appeal more to one demographic than another, particularly when it comes to gender and age. A new survey was recently conducted by GEM Partners in Japan, and it provides a look at how those fan bases shake out for various games.
The survey dealt with over 180,000 Japanese respondents and came up with a list of statistics for several popular game series. Here’s a selection of results for some Nintendo relevant franchises, each one listed with a gender ratio (male to female) and average age for that series’ fans:
Splatoon – 65:35, Age 27
Kirby – 45:55, Age 30
Mario – 70:30, Age 32
Pokémon – 60:40, Age 32
Zelda – 60:40, Age 35
Animal Crossing – 25:75, Age 35
Fortnite – 85:15, Age 25
Minecraft – 70:30, Age 28
Monster Hunter – 80:20, Age 35
Resident Evil – 80:20, Age 38
Yakuza – 60:40, Age 38
Final Fantasy – 70:30, Age 42
Dragon Quest – 75:25, Age 42
The survey notes that player bases for Nintendo titles all hover around an average age of 30 years old, without much gender bias on either side. It also states that the average fan base for video games in general has a gender ratio of 75:25 (male to female) and an average age of 30 years old.
Of course, this is just one particular sampling of gamers in Japan, and the survey might have entirely different results depending on when and where it was conducted. Still, it’s interesting to get an idea of how these games appeal to different kinds of people. Click here to see the full survey results with more games included.
