I first learned of this story when I climbed Moel Morfydd, which lies a few miles to the south, not far from the Horseshoe Pass. I knew that Morfydd was a girl’s name, so I thought there must be some story behind it. I can’t be 100% sure that it’s the same Morfydd that appears in this tale, but it is within sight of the area of the ford by Llanferres, so it seems likely to me.
That’s one thing I love about living in Wales. There are stories everywhere in the landscape, and even if most are half-forgotten these days, they’re easily rediscovered.
Bloody Cumbrians coming south and shagging the Lord of the underworld’s daughter.
Oh and it’s not ‘Scouse mountain’, that is just some nonsense peddled by the Liverpool Echo. There are enough English publications calling places like Llyn Bochlwyd, Lake Australia etc without regurgitating similar for Moel Fammau. Rant over.
